Ubuntu Faster Than Windows XP Feedback

By James Gaskin  13 comments

Last Thursday I reported Ubuntu Faster on My Internet than Windows XP, and the post got posted on Slashdot. If you don't know Slashdot.com, it's the self-proclaimed “news for nerds” site that generates a ton of traffic. Getting mentioned on SlashDot is like seeing your story become a pinata and watching everyone grab a stick and start swinging at your story. Unlike with real pinatas, the stick wielders try and hit you, too. People who take it seriously get their feelings hurt. I just laugh and watch the uproar for what it really is: a circus.

I always come away with two big impressions about a Slashdot storm. First, too many geeks have too much time on their hands. How else could they post so many insults back and forth on Slashdot so quickly?

Second, I come away saddened because so few geeks can, or care to, read carefully. Posts asked why I didn't tell them which browser I used (I did, Firefox 3 on both machines). How could I call this a real test? (I didn't, I just noticed how much faster Ubuntu was than Windows XP, ran the test seven times on each system, back and forth, and reported what I saw). How could I call this a serious lab test? (I didn't, and in fact my first words were “this isn't a rigorous benchmarked lab test yet”).

Windows fanatics always accuse anyone who disputes their claim that Windows Rulz to be brainwashed acolytes of either Linux or Mac, depending. Windows apologists always say that if I would go into the Registry and tweak these 12 settings, Windows will work much better. Mac fanatics will say they knew it first and the Mac does it better anyway.

The fun really came from the few responders who read my post carefully, tested it themselves, and confirmed my quick and dirty test. Several Slashdot members have dual boot machines that run Windows XP and Ubuntu and did the same quick test. Using a dual-boot machine takes out all the hardware variables, like RAM and hard disk speed and the like. In those few reports, they found the same thing I did: untweaked Ubuntu runs faster than untweaked Windows XP.

Want to know what I found really funny? No one questioned that Ubuntu on an old Pentium 4 machine with 768MB of RAM performed better than Vista running on a brand new Intel Core 2 Duo system running at 3.0GHz with 3GB of RAM. How's that for a slap at Vista?

The funniest responses? Those who started a conversation about how much more acceptance Linux would get if the word got out it downloads porn faster. And they're probably right.

Well, I'm a windows user and I have been using it since windows 98. But I have also tried ubuntu for a while. I say, I am no geek so I am more comfortable with windows. But not on vista, I go for xp. And I am also happy with my internet speed. I think everything is cool for me with windows xp.Regards,Bill Bartmann

Just like Bill, I'm also an avid fan of Windows. I am well aware that Ubuntu is way faster that Windows but since I've been using this OS for long time now, I'd still go for it. - Jonathon Budd

Sounds great! As an avid Firefox user (both 2 and 3 for dev purposes), it's wonderful to see that *nix Firefox is quicker. However, what do we do with the plethora of sites out there that are only aimed at IE users? That fact simply will keep us tied to Windows, whether XP, Vista or 7. :(

This article s intellectually dishonest. It's akin to the recent healine on CNN that went something like "Oregon Mayor had Sex with Teen". You first thought is that this guy had sex with a 14, 15, or 16 year old, when in fact it was an 18 year old. While an 18 and 19 year old is still technically a teen, the headline is very disingenuous as it implies that he had sex with a minor rather than an adult. The same applies to your article. Yes, it is true...Ubuntu and other forms of *nix are faster than windows. It uses less resources. But if you were to take Ubuntu and make it do everything Windows does and is capable of doing (and in many cases Windows will run things that *nix won;t run...especially graphically related software, like games...no WINE is not a good substitue (try effectively running World of Warcraft on WINE...that was an experience I don't care to repeat)...it fact it sucks in a major way), you will find tha *nix will be just as slow. Throw in that ith windows, I don't have to go search for obscure dependencies that yum can't find to get a lot of my software to run. Windows wil always be the leader over ad version of *nix. Until someone comes along and creates an interface that is as easy to use and as user friendly as Windows that can be run on any platform and doesn't require a computer science degree to install and maintain, Windows is going to be top dog and *nix gets sloppy thirds (though I did have to laugh with Mac went to being a linux shell...the only way to improve MacOS was to put it on Linux heheheh...too funny...with all of Windows flaws, it is still the best. Vista is a great OS. I could do without some of the Mac'ier items, but overall, I on;t have any substantive issues with it and I look forward to 7. And no, I don't work for MS nor am I an MS zealot. I am a SR. ColdFusion/Java Developer who thinks .NET sucks and that MS should have stayed out of the hardware business. So I would say your article deserve to be hit like a pinata. That was a great analogy BTW...because your story was just as hollow as a pinata.

I loaded Ubuntu on VirtualBox yesterday just because I had never really got around to looking at either of them. The improved browser speed (I was always using Firefox 3.0) came as quite a surprise especially given that the VM at appeared much faster than the native XP or Vista machine (I tried both) that the VM was running on....

So, this seems more of a, "Look at me, I was on Slashdot!" Epic fail...If you knew dick-all about Slashdot, you would know that the people coming to the defense of Windows were not coming from Slashdot. Windows supporters are in the VAST minority over at Slashdot.ORG.However, the people demanding journalistic integrity and accuracy were coming from Slashdot. Don't get all butt-hurt because your article sucked. It got bumped up at Slashdot because people wanted to laugh at you.Mission accomplished.

Windows xp and 2000 was the peak operating systems for Microsoft. They hit there mark with these 2 releases. As with anything in life there is a peak of maximum efficiency anything after that peak the efficiency curve starts to drop. Microsoft is currently headed in this direction. Was there truly any reason that just because xp is considered a 8 year old operating system it was time to move on? From Microsofts view its called revenue, from a consumers point of view they found happyness. They could have stayed with xp and expanded on the user functionality, security, and web experience using xp. But they defied the consumers wants and needs and vendors ability to adjust to Microsofts complet left turn with vista. $1,000 dollars on average for a pc with vista. Now take vista basic, vista home and so on multiply that by the current pc market and you can clearly see how Balmer is thinking and then factor in the upgrade license or downgrade license they get you for. You hemrige money with microsoft. Microsoft We just can't afford you any longer, some may but find it very hard to keep up but most just give up and turn else were due to the finacial scare left in our pockets. The economy cannot afford to shell out for windows 7, thousands are loosing there jobs on a daily basis. Thousands are struggling to make ends meet and thousands have already lost everything. Does Steve Balmer really understand whats happening with consumers? I feel if he was in tune 7 would be on hold vista should be recognized as a huge marketing mistake with huge compisation and listen to the consumer.

Vista reminds me of the 1980 something video game crash for the atari 2600.... let's say ET.MS released vista thinking it was going to be D bomb, turn's out it almost crashed MS. (Well we know, kind of)MS can't crash right? But then they quickly had to come out with W7 which must have been a pain having to come up with a solution so fast! They did a good job, but.... there's a big But....Like my friend said here first... I totally agree.XP should not have been abandoned. It should have matured more and more (it was mature already)I have downgraded my hp g60 to xp and am so, but so damn happy!!! ... but I can not lie to you and I must say.. I am feeling tempted by Ubuntu, which I tested with a li ve cd and it wet my appetite.... Yahoo site builder (I use it for easy web page wysiwyg creation), Paint.net (like photoshop), file barricader (best encryption) and Kmplayer (with it I can take a picture of a frame of video and pressing F advances the video frame by frame "amazing") are what's holding me up from switching. These programs areawesome!!! if ubuntu can run those natively then I will switch without a second thought

It would be better for Microsoft to tweak XP instead of screwing around with a new operating system, they would probably make more money charging a little more for an enhanced XP Version and have happier customers too!

By including about 25 serious grammatical errors in your post, you proved only that you are an idiot.

-- funniest thing is that i had a user slamming his computer with porn -- Had to load ubuntu for its anti spyware features. Maybe the word is getting out.

Well, Vista is a bloated piece of clunkware. Advanced technology and aesthetically pleasing and intuitive interface, sure, but slow as hell. XP is also an 8 year old operating system.Compare to Ubuntu, which is a well written and assembled linux distribution which is light and modern. I think its performance would have been obvious.
