BeInSync on Hiatus Like a Flailing TV Show

By James Gaskin  49 comments

BeInSync was a small company from Israel, a real hotbed of technology innovation for decades. They were bought by Phoenix Technologies to add file synchronization, backup, and sharing to an admittedly hardware-centric product line. Yet as happens too often, a big company buys an interesting small company, loses interest, and the interesting technology disappears. BeInSync is in danger of becoming like one of those TV shows that promises to come back but never does (hello, Middleman, are you coming back?).

When I was checking on BeInSync for a customer project, the Buy button took me to a screen that didn't ask for money, but said, “BeInSync is not accepting new orders at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.” So I sent two messages to the PR contact I had for them and got the following response.

“During this time of economic uncertainty we need to focus our attention and resources. BeInSync was in the early stages of deployment at Phoenix and as such would have required significant resources to make it successful. We have made the decision to suspend direct sales of this product for the time being. We will likely resume sales when we are ready with a new value-added sync and backup product. Thank you for your interest in Phoenix products.”

What a shame for a big company to buy an interesting small company, then turn its fate over to an idiot vice president who knows nothing about the technology or the innovation that made the small company interesting in the first place. Shame on you, Phoenix Technologies, for ruining a good product.

If you make a combination folder synchronization and backup product or service, feel free to post a link in the comments. I'm looking for a good one I can recommend with a clear conscience.

As a former BeInSync energy-person synchronizing a number of folders and actually hundreds of information, I can let you know that SugarSync is the Real Deal. 2 days with SugarSync reminded me of how clunky BeInSync actually was. RIP. I seemed at the other options on this forum, but in case you're an influence-consumer then don't bother.I additionally did an extensive pilot of Microsoft Reside Mesh. What crap, even if it is "beta". After I started seeing anomalous outcomes, I went into the discussion board and noticed all of the bug reports. At that time I ran like hell from it. Plus, my net ops guys received on my case as a result of Reside Mesh utterly sucked-up all of my company's add bandwidth. What's the matter, Microsoft, have not you got enough assets to correctly QA the factor? Live Mesh is a typical Microsoft first-effort, designed by people who're so deep inside the ivory tower they do not even know what day it is.My recommendation: Happily cough-up the couple of dollars for SugarSync and enjoy a properly designed and dealing product.

I completely agree with the above comment, the internet is without a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.natural pet store

Known as DataPod when it was still in its beta testing phase, BeInSync automatically synchronizes your important files—as well as your e-mail messages, contacts, bookmarks, and Windows desktop—across up to three different machines. how to make money online

I have already been employing Beinsync for quite a while now and are really disapointed to find out this move. Photograph demoing some other software programs to synchronization data along with ringbinders on the internet and also have not uncovered anything that operates also. I will be interested in a different resolution. It will be good when someone could by the Beinsync scale plus operate them. Auto Insurance Quotes

I found BeInSync's engineering to be lacking -- I had many many problems and they never got fixed. I quit and went to FolderShare, which became Live Sync, and that worked fine except for the size and file count limitations. I worked around that by dividing big folders. MS is shutting down Live Sync in favor of Live Mesh, but Live Mesh seems to have serious technical problems and is lacking the nice monitoring features of Sync that are important exactly when there are issues.I'm now looking at spideroak and sugarsync, with an eye also on safesync and zumodrive. Dropbox would be my choice if they didn't force all syncing to happen inside a particular folder (your dropbox). (January 2011)

Hey everyone,Try StorageDNA out for your data synchronization needs. StorageDNA has been around for 5 years already and is not going away any time soon. Storage DNA is completely OS platform agnostic. StorageDNA technology has quietly been in use by many large media companies for the past few years and has proven to be the only synchronization method of choice for many. This technology was designed to push extremely large files around to remote locations and it is not just a simple re-hash or glorified ftp client/server... Hi folks. I had a phone connection with a guy from Digital River. We chatted about the demise of BeInSync and he came up with this product. https://www.sugarsync.com, by SharpCast. I haven't tried them yet, and they are certainly more pricey than BeInSync was and they have a finite storage capacity per account (business 250GB for $249 per year) (professional 100GB for $149 per year) (premium 60GB for $99 per year) and (basic 30GB for $49 per year). However, after reading through their web site, it looks like they may have a product that is similar to BeInSync. I'm going to check it out this week. If any of you get more intel, please be sure to post it here too.Lori & G-II are Realtors in Arizona's Phoenix Metro Area.

This is a big issue for me (lawyer) and for a lot of my clients. Sugarsynch stores data on a big group of servers, worse still located in the United States, and not necessarily encrypted. This makes this type of structure (and most sync products have it) open to both US blanket discovery demands - but also vulnerable in security terms. This means that under a lot of legal ethics rules, say in the UK, SugarSync is not acceptable, because it put client files and or data out of the lawyer/law-firm's "possession and control" (part of responsibility for confidential information, especially in Europe, is that a lawyer must keep client confidential information secure and at all times in the lawyers possession and control.) It is also potentially problematic under the "Data Directive." The other problem is whether file data between the sync server and the user's computers is encrypted. Other clients make all sorts of security-certified "stuff" and the certification could be lost if key files were out of their control, while others have data issues resulting from the EU Data Directive.Fair disclosure -- I did have dealings with BeInSync a few years ago - pre acquisition. BeInSync's biggest strength is that it was peer-to-peer, i.e., syncing computers communicated directly without any necessary intermediary storage (you could use it for backup, but this was not mandatory) and that communication could be fully encrypted. This made it both secure, and also acceptable for lawyers because the client's data was never effectively out of your possession and control. This by the way was a thing that BeInSync never made enough of.We wanted to use BeInSync, but we run Mac - and I was in fact checking into whether the long-promised Mac application had arrived when I found out what happened. It's unfortunate. MobileMe by the way is unacceptable for the same reason as SugarSync - it relies on a server farm and is not peer-to-peer. Now I will have to look for an alternative, but as BeInSync filed patents on its peer-to-peer approach, it is not clear if this will be possible.

I was the user of Beinsync. To me it was the best syncronizing program. After it is closed down, I tried many different competing softwares. It seems to me that Syncing.Net meet my requirement. It is a simple program.

I tried to use SugarSync to replace BeInSync. We keep a small database in sync across 3 machines but SugarSync appends the file name with the machine name and it causes the program to not recognize the data file. SugarSync support told me that it is not possible to keep database software in sync with their program because of that and I should find something else. Just FYI. If anyone has a different experience please let me know. I have been unable to overcome this issue.

Syncing.net offers both file sharing and Outlook synchronization (www.syncing.net). It has no web access (like BeInSync) but it's pretty simple to setup. For keeping Outlook calendars & contacts in sync it's the perfect tool.

As a former BeInSync power-user synchronizing multiple folders and literally thousands of files, I can tell you that SugarSync is the Real Deal. 2 days with SugarSync reminded me of how clunky BeInSync really was. I am really desperate because I lost my tiitanium cruzer device and thought I could recover the files which are vital. I paid for the subscription and have not been notified of any discontinuance of the on line back up. Is there any way to recover my data? Tha nks for any help.

I'm pretty sure IS does this already... and I think we partner with Giganews as well. I might be a little mistaken, but, I'll speak to the news people tomorrow, and see what they say. Poke me or something if I've forgotten. Refinance Mortgage Rates
