July 02, 2009, 6:27 PM — The column by Tom Foremski entitled The Internet Devalues Everything It Touches takes a fascinating look at many of the issues faced by companies in this connected age. If you're in any type of “white collar” business, the Internet either has caused big changes to your operations or it soon will.
Remember when a phone call to the other coast cost dollars per minute? Now, with Skype and competitors, you can talk to anyone anywhere in the world with a decent Internet connection for free. That's disruptive.
Too bad we don't have a good way to study the social changes in South Korea. They've now passed the point where 99 percent of households have broadband connections. And in South Korea, they don't call the crappy 128kbps low end DSL broadband, they call 10Mbps broadband. In Hong Kong, companies are able to get 1,000Mbps broadband service.
Read Tom's article and take a look around your office. What jobs have been created by the Internet/ Which ones have been destroyed by the Internet? Who's next? If it might be you, better start working on Plan B.
