May 06, 2003, 9:05 AM — Network computing company 3Com Corp. is moving its headquarters and senior executive staff from Silicon Valley to Massachusetts to focus on its enterprise networking business, company representatives said Tuesday.
The move from Santa Clara, California, to the company's enterprise networking base in Marlborough, Massachusetts, underscores the company's emphasis on the enterprise market as its completes the sale of its telecom equipment business, CommWorks Corp.
3Com announced earlier this year that it was selling CommWorks to broadband and wireless carrier network equipment provider UTStarcom Inc. in a deal valued at US$100 million. The sale comes after a series of rough-and-tumble years in the networking equipment market where 3Com has lost ground to rivals like Cisco Systems Inc.
With CommWorks almost completely handed off, 3Com is moving its President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Claflin , Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Mark Slaven and other executives to Massachusetts in order to facilitate the enterprise networking focus and further tap its key east coast and European markets, the company said.
3Com said that two-thirds of its U.S. market opportunity is on the east coast and half of its sales are in Europe. The company will still retain a presence in Santa Clara, however.
