In a move to deepen its retailing IT expertise, Lawson Software Inc. has acquired Numbercraft Ltd., a U.K. consultancy and provider of analytic software applications for enterprises in the retail and consumer goods manufacturing sectors.

The acquisition, effective immediately, adds measurement and analysis software products and development skills to Lawson's line of retail software systems, the St. Paul, Minnesota, software company said Friday in a statement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lawson provides business process software products aimed at service-based companies and organizations in a number of areas including healthcare, financial services and retail. The products support customers with a variety of tasks, including enterprise performance management, procurement and merchandising.

Numbercraft, based in Oxford, England, has developed technology, based on advanced mathematics, that help convert large volumes of customer, product and sales information into easily usable data, according to the company's Web site (http://www.numbercraft.co.uk). Its software tools provide graphical data to support communication and decision-making, according to the site.

Lawson plans to continue Numbercraft's consulting business for both global retail and consumer goods markets, it said in the statement. In addition, the U.S. company plans to introduce several analytics applications that include technology from both companies, although it didn't say Friday when it expects to deliver those products.
