Sony Ericsson, Sony join Symbian Foma development

Sharp Corp. and the Japanese division of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB will jointly develop cellular telephone handsets based on the Symbian operating system (OS) for NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s third-generation (3G) Foma service in Japan, the companies announced Tuesday.

Sharp and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Japan Inc. also will codevelop software for Foma phones, they said.

Foma is the most widely used network that employs WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology in Japan. NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile operator, has been pushing to extend its appeal.
