Microsoft Corp. has acquired MotionBridge SA, which is based in Paris and provides search technology for mobile phone operators, Microsoft announced Monday at the 3GSM World Conference in Barcelona.

MotionBridge technology allows for "deep indexing and deep indexing of mobile operators' content assets," Pieter Knook, senior vice president of Microsoft's mobile and embedded business and communications sector, said at a news conference.

Microsoft will combine MotionBridge's "smart" search engine technology with its own mobile search technology to provide operators and users with a richer experience, Knook said.

Several mobile phone operators are currently using MotionBridge's mobile phone search technology, Orange SA, Sprint Corp. and O2 Ltd. currently use MotionBridge's mobile search engine.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not provided.
