Teradata melds data mining, modeling, scoring into database engine

April 26, 2001, 02:02 PM —  InfoWorld —

KEEPING WITH THE trend to pack more and more BI (business intelligence) functionality into the core database, NCR's Teradata division announced on Monday that it has integrated data mining capability, analytic modeling, and scoring into one database engine.

The announcement comes with the release of Teradata Warehouse 6.1, an umbrella name for a new version of the Teradata database that includes data warehousing and data mining software, such as Teradata Warehouse Miner.

Teradata previously added preprocessing to the engine, said Vickie Farrell, vice president of marketing at Teradata, in Dayton, Ohio. "Now we've incorporated the analytics, including modeling and scoring, into the engine as well," she said

Farrell said that having all three steps in the core database engine means that data does not have to be moved, and it is processed in parallel, thereby making use of all available nodes in a system to process more quickly.

Analysts said that having the analytics closer to the data helps customers more quickly and efficiently analyze aspects of a business.

Larry Gosselin, director of global data warehousing practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York, said that the faster companies can analyze their data, the more valuable analytics become, particularly for customer-related data.

"Moving the analytic pieces and data closer to each other makes for not only higher performance but also for more complete analytics," Gosselin said.

Teradata's announcement is the most recent in a string from companies incorporating data mining technology into the engine. Late last month, IBM pulled pieces of its Intelligent Miner data mining tool into DB2, and both Oracle and Microsoft have added similar data mining and BI capabilities into their core database engines as well.
