Compaq has chosen Lindon, Utah-based Altiris as its preferred vendor for imaging software used to automatically deploy and customize desktop machines from the server.
Altiris eXpress lets network managers save time and money by automatically distributing software and configuration information to remote PCs. For example, IT can initially deploy and manage software distribution, operating system installation and hardware migrations for client PCs.
Compaq will use Altiris eXpress to customize PCs it sells to its customers. The company will also jointly develop new software with Altiris that aims to ease the headaches of day-to-day PC management.
Compaq Direct, the group that fills orders for customized PCs, also uses Altiris RapiDeploy to set personal preferences for PCs. RapiDeploy allows net managers to deploy hundred of machines in minutes using IP or Novell's IPX protocol. Each machine can have unique settings and different operating system environments such as Windows 95 or Windows NT.
Customers can purchase a special version of Altiris eXpress from Compaq to do their own client PC customizations.
