Defrag utility ready

Network World 1/17/01

Dave Kearns, Network World

In a newsletter two weeks ago, I broached the subject of fragmentation of NetWare disk drives and told you about the efforts of John Hanley, the man who created Ghost for NetWare, to come up with a defragmentation utility.

On this topic

Hanley now has the software ready for sale or evaluation on his Web site (www.portlocksoftware.com), and you really should take a look. The Volume Defragment Utility for NetWare (This really needs a snappier name, John.) can do some or all of the following, as you wish:

* Defragment primary and secondary directory tables.

* Defragment primary and secondary extended directory tables.

* Defragment Block Suballocation Tables.

* Defragment file data.

* Defragment extended file data.

* Move files that have not been accessed for a while towards the end of the volume.

* Move deleted files that have not yet been purged towards the end of the volume.

* Change the order of Directory Table entries.

* Change the order of Block Suballocation Table entries.

It’s well worth a look. And while you're there you might also want to evaluate the Volume Resize Utility for NetWare - a very handy tool.
