SPS Commerce upgrades catalog services

May 4, 2001, 12:53 PM —  InfoWorld —

SPS COMMERCE HAS upgraded its business-to-business catalog services to allow retailers to pull updated supplier product content into their backend ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems, the company announced Monday.

The enhancements to SPS' Catalog Service are designed to improve e-commerce transactions between large buyers and their small and midsize suppliers. It now offers retailers a browser-based development tool to create customized synchronization agents that pull new and updated supplier product into backend systems.

SPS, in St. Paul, Minn., also has added browser-based, self-service features designed to provide small and midsize suppliers with a cost-effective solution to load and update detailed product and shipping specifications into the SPS product data repository.

The upgraded catalog offerings are designed specifically for smaller enterprises that have traditionally exchanged product information with the large buyers via phone, fax, or mail.

Altus Athletic, an athletic manufacturing company based in Altus, Okla., has used several online catalogs as requested by their customers, said Guy Brigman, Altus' information systems manager.

However, the company found that only SPS' service offered the ability to "mass upload" product information rather than requiring unique forms to be filled out field by field to populate the catalog. Because the catalog is designed specifically for use with a supplier's existing customer base, suppliers are able to securely grant unique access rights, product pricing, and order information to their catalog and its fields for each individual retailer.

SPS provides transaction management, application integration, and supply-chain services to large enterprises, such as Sear Roebuck & Co. and Kmart.
