Migration help available

Network World 4/18/01

Dave Kearns, Network World

Over the past year and a half this newsletter has devoted a lot of space to issues of migration to and interoperability with Windows 2000. We've pointed out lots of third-party management and migration tools as well as given the occasional hint at possible issues.

Now Microsoft has set up a fairly comprehensive Web site bringing together all of its expertise in the area of system migration and interoperability.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/interop/default.asp

Here you'll find details on Windows 2000 interacting (either permanently, or for migration purposes) with NetWare, Unix, IBM mainframes, legacy Windows operating systems and even Apple products.

It's quite comprehensive. For example, the papers available for Windows 2000 and NetWare include:

* Interoperability in a Novell NetWare Environment.

* Windows 2000 Professional in a NetWare Environment.

* NetWare to Windows 2000 Server Migration Planning Guide.

* Synchronizing Windows 2000 Active Directory with Novell Directories.

* MSDSS (Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services) Technical Overview.

* MSDSS Deployment: Understanding Synchronization and Migration.

* MSDSS Deployment: Implementing Synchronization and Migration.

Some of the other offerings are not quite as extensive (single papers for IBM Host integration and Macintosh services) but still cover most of the issues that may arise.

Additionally, there are a number of papers outlining Active Directory, Microsoft Meta-directory and Microsoft Universal Data Access strategies for directory and database integration.

If you're involved with a heterogeneous network, these documents could help - even if you aren't currently experiencing any difficulties.
