Testing Beans

February 27, 2001, 04:40 PM —  Network World —

The problem with building Web applications that use Enterprise JavaBeans is that these apps become Big Code very quickly and they are usually very complicated. Once built into a system, they can be very difficult to debug.

Empirix (http://www.empirix.com), a provider of testing and monitoring products for Web applications, recently announced a version of its Bean-test system optimized for IBM WebSphere Application Server Version 3.5:

The Bean-test system tests functions and load handling of EJBs with a nonintrusive testing approach (that is, a " harness " that the EJB runs in so that the EJB is treated as a black box -- very important, as it ensures that the code operates as it will in the final application). The goal is to test not only the logic but also the scalability of the EJB.

Bean-test automatically generates a multithreaded Java "Test Client" (the harness) specific to each EJB and application server. Once the testing is completed, Bean-test produces extensive reports on performance, including performance graphs of response time, response time per method and exceptions generated as you increase the number of virtual clients.

Empirix claims that "the WebSphere optimization assures that Bean-test will identify the EJB, generate a test client, connect to the WebSphere 3.5 server and accurately emulate load on the deployed EJB."

Pricing begins at $29,995. Available for evaluation is fully functional version of Bean-test with a 20 virtual-user-load test license; functional test facility; supporting WebLogic 4.5.1, 5.1.0, and 6.0; WebSphere 3.0.2 and 3.5; and BlueStone Total-e-Server.
