Sabre signs $30 million PC deal with Compaq

Sabre Holdings Corp. signed a deal yesterday with Compaq Computer Corp. with a potential value of $30 million to offer a variety of desktop PCs, notebook computers and services to more than 15,000 Sabre travel agencies.

The agencies will make their purchases through a customized electronic procurement marketplace operated by Ariba Inc. of Mountain View, Calif.

Tom Woods, vice president of the Fort Worth, Texas-based company's Sabre Marketplace unit, said the agreement makes Compaq the only desktop supplier in that electronic marketplace. He added that it "will make it easy" for the agencies to obtain desktops configured to work with the Sabre system.

Marius Haas, vice president of marketing at Compaq, said "this offering gives agents direct access to products and services they need to run their business."

Compaq has supplied Sabre with more than 150,000 PCs over the past three years under previous agreements.

Woods said it was hard to estimate the size of a typical PC order from a travel agency since the agencies range "from mom-and-pop shops to agencies with 15 to 20 PCs [to others] with a hundred or more."
