CREDENTIALS: Project management certification

December 12, 2000, 12:34 PM —  InfoWorld —

The basics:

Project management certification is not as widely available as other
certifications.

Who offers training:

Technical training providers, e-learning organizations, associations, and some
universities

Who offers certification testing:

Project Management Institute (PMI), Gartner Institute, and a few other
organizations

Who has earned the certificate:

Approximately 15,000 project managers hold PMI certification and work in 26
countries.

PMI and Gartner requirements:

PMI breaks down requirements by a candidate's education level and project
management experience.

Degreed PMI test takers must have a minimum of 4,500 hours of project management
experience.

Non-degreed PMI test takers need a minimum of 7,500 hours of project management
experience.

To obtain the Gartner Institute project management certification, the candidate
must take and pass the institute's IT project management core capabilities exam.

Costs:

Costs vary by provider for both certification and sponsor. For example, the PMI
certification test is $405 for institute members and $555 for nonmembers.

What people are saying:

"The effort to obtain the professional certification is not miniscule. My
preparation for the certification testing included taking exam preparation classes
through the local PMI chapter and a great deal of studying. The test questions were
challenging in that they required a bit of thought, but the questions were not [as]
tricky as I had heard."
