NEC, NTT team on quantum computing research

February 15, 2001, 01:36 PM —  InfoWorld —

NEC AND NIPPON Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) have agreed to work together on the development of quantum computing technology, a spokesman for NEC said Tuesday.

Corporations and governments around the world have great interest in quantum computing because it holds with it the possibility of super-fast computers that could complete in a second what it takes an existing supercomputer a year to do.

The ability to control quantum particles is the key to opening up this new world of computing. The two companies will pool research in the area and work on, among other things, the control of multiple quantum bits. NEC previously announced it had succeeded in maintaining control over a pair of quantums, or a quantum bit. The ability to control two or more bits is the next big hurdle researchers need to overcome along the road to development of a quantum computer.

No further details on the research pact were available from the companies.
