Apple offers rebates on iMacs, PowerMacs
Apple Computer Inc. is offering either a free digital camera or a rebate to users who purchase a new iMac computer between now and Dec. 31.
Users purchasing either a 600MHz or 700MHz iMac between Friday and the end of the year at any U.S. store will receive either a US$150 rebate or a Photosmart 318xi digital camera from Hewlett-Packard Co., according to information on Apple's Web site. With the mail-in rebate, the 700MHz iMac now costs $1,349, while the 600MHz version is now priced at $1,149.
The HP Photosmart 318xi, which sells for $199 at HP's online store, features 2.3 megapixel resolution, a built-in flash, autofocus, and a 1.75-inch (4.4-centimeter) color display. The camera stores up to 80 images on an 8M-byte flash card and features a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface.
Apple is also offering package rebates on three different PowerMac G4 models when bundled with flat-panel monitors. Users receive a rebate on Apple's 15-inch, 17-inch or 22-inch displays when purchased at the same time as a G4. The purchase of a 733MHz PowerMac G4 gets a $100 rebate on a display, the 867MHz PowerMac G4 is worth a $200 rebate towards a display and the dual-processor 800MHz PowerMac G4 gets a $500 rebate towards a display, according to Apple's Web site.
The moves are the latest in a chain of companies offering rebates and bundles in an attempt to get users to purchase new computers despite the weak economy. HP is offering deals, including $150 rebates on some PC, monitor and printer bundles, $100 rebates on some monitors and even $50 rebates on some of its Jornada handhelds. Dell Computer Corp. is currently offering a free upgrade to a CD-RW (rewritable compact disc) or DVD (digital versatile disc) drive with the purchase of some notebooks and desktops, as well as online rebates ranging from $50 to $150 on certain notebooks and desktops.
