Compaq packs speedy DDR memory into desktops

February 22, 2001, 11:18 AM —  IDG News Service —

SAN FRANCISCO -- Compaq Computer Corp. unveiled two new desktop PCs for consumers Wednesday running on processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD). One of the desktops is the first from Compaq to use an emerging high-speed memory type aimed at users looking for extra graphics punch.

The Presario Series 7000z model 7QS, which is priced from US$1,299, is Compaq's first desktop to include the DDR (double data rate) SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory) memory technology, a company spokesman said. DDR SDRAM doubles the data transfer rate in a chipset to give users an edge when working with graphic-intensive applications or creating digital content.

The memory standard is being promoted by AMD, Taiwanese chip maker Via Technologies Inc. and several memory makers as a cheaper alternative to RDRAM (Rambus DRAM), which is based on proprietary technology from Rambus Inc., a memory technology design company in Los Altos, California.

The 7QS is offered with AMD's Athlon processor at speeds ranging from 1 Ghz to 1.2Ghz. Compaq will also include MyMovieStudio video editing software and DVD-R technology for writing information onto DVDs (digital versatile disks).

The Houston, Texas-based PC maker also unwrapped its Presario 5000z series model 5UV PC, which is priced from $799 including a 15-inch monitor. The low-cost machine comes with an AMD Athlon or Duron processor with speeds ranging from 800Mhz to 1Ghz, Compaq said.

The PCs are immediately available at Compaq's Consumer Web site, at http://athome.compaq.com.
