Dell announces new Dimension PCs

May 21, 2002, 01:58 PM —  ITworld.com —

Intel Corp.'s new 845 chipset family will power two new computers from Dell Computer Corp., the Dimension 4500S and the Dimension 4500, Dell announced Tuesday.

The Dimension 4500S uses the 845G chipset, which contains integrated graphics processing, alleviating the need for a separate graphics card, said Linda Gerardi, Dimension product marketing manager for Dell. The Dimension 4500's 845E chipset lacks the integrated graphics, she said. Each chipset supports both 400MHz and 533MHz front-side bus speeds.

Both chipsets enable fast downloads from peripheral devices, such as digital cameras or MP3 music players, through support for USB (Universal Serial Bus) 2.0 ports.

The 4500S is designed to fit into tight places, measuring 4.2 inches by 15.3 inches by 17 inches (10.67 centimeters by 38.86 centimeters by 43.18 centimeters). It weighs 22 pounds (9.9 kilograms). The 4500 carries Dell's standard chassis, measuring 16.7 inches by 7.1 inches by 17.6 inches, and weighing 28 pounds.

A typical configuration of the Dimension 4500, including a 2.26GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with a 533MHz front side system bus, 256M bytes of DDR SDRAM (Dual Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM), a 20G-byte hard drive, a 17-inch monitor, and a 32M-byte RAGE Ultra Graphics Card from ATI Technologies Inc., is priced at US$1,099.

The Dimension 4500S, with a typical configuration of an 1.7GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256M bytes of shared DDR SDRAM, a 20G-byte hard drive, a 15-inch monitor, and a 48x CD-ROM drive, is at priced at $799.

Both prices are for the U.S. only. Worldwide pricing was not available, as prices are set differently per region. The Dimension 4500S will not be available in Asia-Pacific until June 3, Dell said.

Tuesday's announcement is the second in as many days for Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas. The company Monday bundled Gigabit Ethernet technology into a new desktop, the OptiPlex GX260. Gateway Inc. also announced several PCs with the new Intel chipsets Monday.
