Dell lets IT 'dumb down' OptiPlex PC
When Dell Ccomputer Corp. on Monday begins shipping the new OptiPlex GX150 SF desktop computer, it will effectively give IT administrators the ability to "dumb down" the full size PC to a thin client computing terminal, without being locked in to the limitations of a true thin client, according to Harvey Rosenblum, the OptiPlex marketing manager at Round Rock, Texas-based Dell.
The OptiPlex GX150 SF is the most recent addition to Dell's OptiPlex line, which was radically redesigned last September to better meet the needs of enterprise customers concerned with longer product lifecycles, interchangeable components, and hardware security.
With the GX150 SF, Dell adds what it calls LegacySelect Technology Control, which can enable or disable certain functions such as serial ports, parallel ports, integrated networking, or integrated audio.
The application of LegacySelect Technology Control allows companies to use the GX150 SF in either a general purpose computing environment or in a more controlled, task-specific environment, where full office productivity tools or Internet access are not required.
Enabling or disabling functionality can be performed locally on the PC or from a network server using Dell's OpenManage IT Assistant software.
Available from Dell immediately, an OptiPlex GX150 SF with an 866MHz Intel Pentium III processor starts at US$799, without a monitor or peripherals. A 600MHz Intel Celeron processor version is also available for $625, also without a monitor or peripherals, Rosenblum said.
