Dell releases new Latitude portable notebook

January 13, 2004, 08:57 AM —  IDG News Service —

Dell Inc. rolled out the new Latitude D505 late last week as the latest edition to its line of laptops designed for mobile business users, Dell said Monday.

The D505 has a new chassis that allows Dell customers to select a 15-inch display on the D505, unlike the D500 that was released last year, said Jeremy Bolen, a Dell spokesman. It also comes with support for Intel Corp.'s new Celeron M processors, which are scaled-down versions of the Pentium M processor used in top-of-the-line notebooks, he said.

At just over 5 pounds (2.25 kilograms), the D505 is slightly heavier than the D500, but both models are targeted at business travelers on a budget, Dell said. The D505 and D500 are in the middle of Dell's Latitude product family with heavier and more powerful versions available on one end of the scale, and lighter versions with smaller screens available on the other end.

A base configuration of the D505 costs US$1,049, and comes with a 1.2GHz Celeron M processor, 128M bytes of memory, a 20G-byte hard drive, a 14.1-inch display and Intel's Pro/Wireless 802.11b chip. Customers can upgrade to Dell's TrueMobile 1300 chip with support for both 802.11b and 802.11g at no charge.
