CES - Intel shows mobile Pentium 4-based notebooks
LAS VEGAS - Intel Corp. showed notebooks PCs running its upcoming mobile Pentium 4 processor here at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Wednesday.
Intel was using Pentium 4-based notebooks from Toshiba Corp., Micron PC Inc. and Gateway Inc. for demonstrations in its booth at the show.
The company confirmed that the processor is on track for a launch in the first half of this year, starting with a 1.5GHz version of the processor and moving up to 2GHz by year end, said Don MacDonald, director of marketing for the Intel Mobile Group.
The mobile Pentium 4 will combine the performance benefits of the desktop Pentium 4 with power-saving functions such as an enhanced version of SpeedStep, Intel's technology for dropping the clock speed of a chip to conserve power when a laptop is running on batteries, and a "deeper sleep" mode, in which the processor will use even less power when in sleep mode, MacDonald said.
The processor will find its way into both full-size and thin-and-light notebooks by the end of the year, MacDonald said.
