A new server from a new player
Fujitsu Technology Solutions is introducing a new high-end scalable processor architecture (SPARC) server for large enterprises running customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, and other data center or mission-critical applications.
Called Primepower, the Sun Solaris-based server is scalable up to 128 processors and uses a crossbar switch technology to transfer data at a rate of 57.6 G-bytes per second. It has hot-swappable components, such as system boards, that can be replaced during operation. In addition, Primepower performs error checking and correction data protection on all levels of cache and data paths, ensuring protection from one-bit errors, and has failover clustering software that protects it in the event of the failure of one of the processors.
The Primepower family comes in five models, ranging from servers with as few as six processors and as many as 128 processors. They have up to 96 PCI slots and support Fibre Channel RAID storage.
Primepower servers vary in price according to configuration. A midrange pedestal-mount Primepower 600 configuration consisting of four 360 MHz, 8 M-byte CPU modules, 2 G-bytes of memory, four 18 G-byte disk drives, a redundant power supply and a Solaris server license is $90,000.
Fujitsu, a mainstay in the Asian marketplace, quietly launched its servers and storage in the United States at the end of last year. Fujitsu acquired the Primepower GSS 4900 from its mainframe subsidiary, Amdahl.
