Windows 2000 gets fourth service pack

IDG News Service 6/27/03

Microsoft Corp. released Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000 on Thursday, a bundle of all updates and patches for the operating system released since Service Pack 3 last August.

Microsoft also updated the End User License Agreement (EULA) for Windows 2000 to address privacy concerns. Users are now told more specifically about features in the product that will "call home" to Microsoft, said Bob O'Brien, group product manager in Microsoft's Windows Server Division.

"What we have done is updated the EULA so the customer knows that they can turn off these features they may not want to have turned on," he said. "This is about being super transparent with our customers so they know what the product is doing."

Service Pack 4 does not bring any new features to Windows 2000. It includes all security fixes and driver updates released since Service Pack 3 and is meant for customers who don't apply all the updates when they are released, but want to do maintenance on their own schedule, O'Brien said.

Service Pack 4 is available for Windows 2000 client and server products at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4.
