Novell programming treasures

May 10, 2001, 03:48 PM —  Network World —

If you've been a NetWare manager for an appreciable amount of time, or if you started with an older version of NetWare, you probably miss some of the old DOS utilities that were such a help in NetWare 2 and NetWare 3.

Well, they aren't gone forever. Novell has, in fact, made the source code available for many of these old DOS=based utilities which can be freely downloaded. If you have any C programming abilities (or know someone who does, and can talk them into doing a favor for you) this could prove invaluable.

While some of the utilities simply don't make sense (Printcon and Printdef have no meaning in a printing system based on Novell Distributed Printer System - NDPS), others provide functionality that's no longer available in utilities for NetWare 4 and 5.

These are only available to members of Novell's developer Network, but signing up is free as is the download (from the appropriately named URL, http://developer.novell.com/graveyard/. You'll also find sources for other discontinued Novell products, services, utilities and technologies - a veritable treasure trove for the programming hobbyist.

In the DOS utilities package you'll find:

*ADDICON ALLOW CASTOFF CASTON

*CHKDIR CHKVOL COLORPAL DOSGEN

*DSPACE FLAGDIR GRANT LISTDIR

*NCOPY NCUPDATE NDIR NPATH

*NWXTRACT PRINTCON PRINTDEF

Once you've downloaded DOSUTILS.EXE, run it as DOSUTILS–y so that the prompts to create subdirectories are automatically answered yes (there are many, many subdirectories created).

This will be very useful to some of you and of some use to a lot of you, but may be of no use to others. But, for free, it’s worth a try.

On a typical day, weather.com, the Web site for The Weather Channel in Atlanta, serves up between 15 million and 20 million page views.
