By Rick Perera, InfoWorld |  Networking

CONTRACT ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING company Flextronics International announced Friday the acquisition of two photonics businesses, Wave Optics and Fico Fiber Optics.

Wave Optics designs and manufactures optical components for the DWDM (dense wavelength-division multiplexing), SONet (Synchronous Optical Network), and Gigabit Ethernet markets, while Fico specializes in optical modules for telecommunications and data communications hardware makers, Singapore-based Flextronics said in a statement.

Flextronics gave no financial details about the deals and company officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

The company said the acquisitions would help solidify its leadership in the emerging trend of photonics outsourcing. Flextronics has optical manufacturing facilities in San Jose, Calif.; Richardson, Texas; Raleigh, N.C.; Westford, Mass.; Hillsborough, Ore.; and Israel.
