EMC embraces Compaq, HP, Hitachi with storage software

STORAGE GIANT EMC on Tuesday offered an olive branch to four non-EMC storage platforms with the introduction of its ESN Manager software.

The new technology will better enable companies with mixed-vendor storage networks to add EMC storage while preserving investments made in non-EMC storage, according to Paul Ross, manager of network storage marketing at Hopkinton, Mass.-based EMC.

Certain disk storage gear from Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and Hitachi Data Systems, as well as tape storage systems from Storage Technology Corp., can now interoperate with EMC products using ESN Manager software.

"In the same fabric and at the same time we [companies can] have different vendor storage and tape arrays," Ross said.

The software provides a single management interface for all qualified storage devices in a mixed network, company officials said.

Bundled into the software are the required tools for zoning and volume access control in a mixed vendor storage network, Ross said.

ESN Manager automatically zones and sets volume access control for EMC equipment through a feature called AutoPathing. Volume access control, which prevents accidental data overwriting, must be done manually for all non-EMC storage equipment, Ross said.

EMC expects to eventually add more names to the list of companies whose storage systems can be managed by ESN Manager.

Recently EMC has aggressively courted multivendor interoperability with its storage products, according to Steve Duplessie, a senior analyst with the Enterprise Storage Group, in Milford, Mass.

"EMC has the most APIs," said Duplessie, and is a leading member of SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association), a storage interoperability standards body.

EMC owns the No. 1 position for worldwide revenue for externally located disk storage, according to estimates by Framingham, Mass.-based International Data Corp.
