GE Global eXchange acquires content management company

April 5, 2001, 09:00 AM —  InfoWorld —

GE GLOBAL EXCHANGE Services (GXS), a business-to-business e-commerce exchange, announced Wednesday that it has acquired TPN Register, a Rockville, Md.-based content management services company.

The acquisition will allow GXS, in Gaithersburg, Md., to provide a complete Web-based e-procurement solution to buyers and sellers across multiple industries, according to company officials. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

TPN's interactive catalog management services are designed to enable buyers and suppliers to customize catalog content for individual user's specific needs. The acquisition of TPN will allow GXS to provide catalog content, purchasing workflow, b-to-b integration, and transaction capabilities industries.

The acquisition will give GXS customers access to more than 2 million catalog line items, said Harvey Seegers, president and CEO of GXS.

"We believe that's the largest electronic catalog in the market today," he said. "Customers are more and more understanding that the task of maintaining their own content is a difficult and costly one."

TPN was founded in 1997 as a joint venture between GXS and Thomas Publishing, which has agreed to sell its interest in TPN to GXS. TPN's primary solution, TPN Marketplace, provides purchasing professionals access to a searchable catalog of goods and services in a standardized format from an approved supplier base. The catalog content includes private pricing and contract terms for items from more than 1,300 suppliers.
