Intel announces sub-$100 Gigabit ethernet adaptor
Intel Corp. Tuesday announced that it has started shipping samples of Gigabit Ethernet adaptors for both desktops and servers, with the desktop version to be set to be released to the public later in the year for US$99.
The adaptors both use standard copper wire networks and can be deployed into existing Category 5 Ethernet or Fast Ethernet networks, Intel said in a statement. The server adaptor supports the PCI-X bus architecture, and both adaptors will support various operating systems, including Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP, as well as Linux, Novell Inc.'s Netware and Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Solaris, Intel said. The network adaptors will be demonstrated at next week's TechXNY conference in New York.
Pricing for the Gigabit Ethernet adaptor for servers will be announced later in the year, Intel said.
Santa Clara, California-based Intel also announced that it is now in volume production of single-chip Ethernet controllers, designed to stop bottlenecks created by bandwidth-intensive applications, including data warehousing, IP (Internet Protocol) storage and video streaming, the company said. The controllers, which let vendors build Gigabit Ethernet connections into servers and workstations, are up to 70 percent smaller and use less than 50 percent of the power of previous models, Intel said. The 27 millimeter by 27 millimeter package is priced at $68.50, and the 21 millimeter by 21 millimeter package costs $69.90 in 1,000 unit quantities, a standard measurement in chip sales.
