N+I: Vendors tackle Web performance with caching, content delivery

May 11, 2001, 04:02 PM —  InfoWorld —

Devices designed to boost the speed and scalability of e-business sites were abundant at the NetWorld+Interop conference here, promising improved Web performance and the capability to serve more concurrent users.

Content delivery device vendors Fireclick, in Los Altos, Calif., and SpiderCache, in Vancouver, British Columbia, announced an alliance at the show to address server-side and network-edge Web performance. Fireclick's technology attempts to speed content from the edge by performing predictive downloading of Web pages to a user's browser. SpiderCache provides server-side caching of dynamic content. The companies plan to combine technologies to create end-to-end Web performance improvement, according to Fireclick officials.

"The two technologies are perfectly compatible and highly complementary," said Steve O'Brien, vice president of marketing at Fireclick. "The combination can generate more revenue for content and commerce sites through content acceleration. Fireclick speeds the last mile, and SpiderCache addresses the fist mile of content delivery. They give synergistic effects to the end-user."

Also exhibiting at the show, ClickArray Networks announced the Array 1000, a Web appliance designed to speed online content delivery. The Array 1000 integrates server load balancing, reverse proxy caching, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) acceleration, and clustering into one device. The device is capable of supporting 20,000 new HTTP requests per second, 500Mbps of throughput, and one million concurrent connections, according to officials at ClickArray, in San Jose, Calif.

Meanwhile, Campbell, Calif.-based FineGround Networks announced it has added support for SSL content and online transactions to its FineGround Condenser content acceleration device. The Condenser is designed to reduce bandwidth usage by transmitting the changes that occur in a Web site in successive downloads of the same document or similar content.

On a typical day, weather.com, the Web site for The Weather Channel in Atlanta, serves up between 15 million and 20 million page views. But in September 2004, when back-to-back hurricanes ransacked Florida, the peak traffic on one day more than tripled: over 70 million page views by more than 7 million unique visitors.
