Novell adopts PXE, gives directory to vendors
Novell announced Tuesday at NetWorld+Interop that the next version of its desktop management package will be enhanced to make distribution of software more automatic. It also said it would give NDS eDirectory away to certain users for free.
The company will be adding a PXE (pronounced 'pixie') support option to the next version of ZENworks for Desktops, code-named FireStarter, which is expected to be released this summer. It will also give NDS eDirectory to users that have purchased any Net Services software, such as ZENworks, iChain, DirXML, Single Sign-on, Portal Services or OnDemand Services.
PXE, or Pre-Boot Execution Environment, is a specification published by Intel for remote desktop management that allows a desktop machine to boot itself from its network adapter without user intervention. Most LAN adapters and motherboards have adopted PXE. Using PXE, network administrators can determine if the remote machine's disk needs to be imaged or updated without turning the machine on. PXE runs on Windows 95 or 98, Windows NT 4 or 2000, and Windows ME workstations.
Any customer with a maintenance/upgrade agreement will receive the PXE support at no charge.
