Career planning resources online

December 8, 2000, 04:11 PM —  InfoWorld —

CareerBuilder - href="http://www.careerbuilder.com" target="_new">www.careerbuilder.com

What you'll find: The site includes a fairly robust selection of career-related
articles and resources, including a special area devoted to IT professionals.

What you won't: CareerBuilder doesn't have many weaknesses, but there is little
material related to high-level management issues.

The essentials: Although the site is fairly commercial, it holds plenty of original
content. CareerBuilder is being acquired by Knight Ridder and Tribune Media.

CareerPerfect.com - href="http://www.careerperfect.com" target="_new">www.careerperfect.com

What you'll find: The site provides IT skills assessment testing, links to salary
surveys, relocation tools, and career planning resources.

What you won't: The site largely focuses on offering fee-based career-related tools
rather than job-hunting tips. Advertisements on the site are not obtrusive.

The essentials: The site uses a no-nonsense approach to presentation, but it is not
the most comprehensive career site available.

Occupational Outlook Handbook - href="http://www.bls.gov/ocohome.htm" target="_new">www.bls.gov/ocohome.htm

What you'll find: Comprehensive career information categorized by occupation and
government projections on future career trends are found at this federal government
site.

What you won't: There are no ads, no opinion columns, no tips, and no links to
external Web sites. Basically the site has no personality, but plenty of raw
information.

The essentials: This handbook is published annually by the U.S. Department of
Labor. The report contains a treasure trove of facts and statistics.
