Oracle unveils new website
Database software company Oracle Corp. unveiled a refurbished, repackaged Oracle.com Web site at its AppsWorld developer's conference here Tuesday, touting the site as "a Yahoo for business."
"Four million people access Oracle.com every day," said Mark Jarvis,
Oracle's chief marketing officer. The site can be customized for individual
companies and individual workers with a company.
The new Oracle home page wraps together IT industry news, financial information
resources and information for Oracle software users. Customers using Netledger,
OracleExchange.com, and OracleSalesOnline.com may sign on to online services
offered at the site using a single log-on and password.
The redesigned site reflects the changing view of software as a service and
not a product, said Jeff Henley, chief financial officer and executive vice
president for Oracle, in a Tuesday keynote.
"The Internet is about a lot of things," he said, referring to quick
transfer of information and a means to change commerce and society. In Oracle's
case, it's about saving money.
The celebration of Oracle's internal $1 billion cost-saving last year is a
theme for the conference. Using the Internet and scalable business models based
on its software, Oracle has been able to grow fast, without adding people, he
said.
Henley pointed to the consolidation of the company's IT operations, such as
reducing the number of regional data centers from three to one, or reducing
the number of mail servers from almost 100 to two, as examples.
