Information technology expense per employee

April 1, 2008, 09:07 PM —  APQC —

APQC has released a metric snapshot of IT expense per employee. The snapshot is based on APQC's Open Standards Benchmarking CollaborativeSM (OSBC) research, which indicates a large gap between the cost of IT infrastructure within organizations at the top level ($1,712), median level ($4,796) and bottom level ($11,095).

When you look only at organizations with large revenue bases (i.e., greater than or equal to $1 billion), the gap gets even wider between top and bottom performers. For these organizations, the IT expense per employee at the top level ($3,335) is 4.5 times less than the costs for the bottom level ($15,035).

When you look only at organizations with smaller revenue bases (i.e., less than or equal to $1 billion), the relative costs for the organizations get smaller but the spread gets even wider for the three categories. For these organizations, the IT expense per employee at the top level ($1,184) is 7.47 times less than the costs for the bottom level ($8,841).

When looking at the infrastructure resources involved with planning and maintaining the customer delivery process as well as ensuring its cost effectiveness are organizations getting better at managing costs relative to their employee base?

If your organization is interested in finding out at no cost how its IT expense per employee ratio compares in terms of cost and productivity metrics, we invite you to participate in APQC's IT survey.

In return for participation, you will receive a complimentary, detailed, personalized report comparing your organization's performance against the OSBC database. Of course, APQC keeps all data confidential according to the rules laid out in its Benchmarking Code of Conduct
