Capcom scores hottest game yet for the PSP
Capcom Co. Ltd.'s "Monster Hunter Portable 2nd" made an impressive debut in Japan, accounting for 39 percent of games sold during its launch week, according to an estimate published Friday.
The action title achieved sales of 705,281 units in the week of Feb. 19 to 25, according to data from Media Create Co. Ltd. That substantially beats other games in the same series and also makes it the hottest debuting software yet for the PlayStation Portable (PSP).
During the week the top 100 games sold a combined 1.8 million units, said Media Create. The company receives actual sales data from around 3,000 stores across Japan and uses that to estimate nationwide sales.
The strong launch came down to the popularity of the series to date, and word of mouth between gamers, said Media Create.
The PlayStation Portable had one of its best weeks in a while, selling 100,210 units. That made the PSP the second-best-selling hardware, behind Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s DS Lite, which sold 136,138 units, said Media Create.
Among the new-generation consoles Nintendo's Wii continued to dominate with sales of 78,506 units. The PlayStation 3 achieved sales of 19,315 for fourth place overall and the Xbox 360 was in sixth place with sales of 4,183 units. In fifth was the PlayStation 2.
