Huh, never thought of that. I'll have to give that a whirl.
Some of the comments in that article indicate that you don't even need to take out the electronics; just throw the whole thing in there as-is, cut back on the detergent, run it, and let it dry for a couple days.

If you're really brave you can try cleaning it in a dishwasher, as this person recommends. (Caution: You need to remove some inside parts.)
