Social media’s strengths and weaknesses as a news gathering and distribution device before and during Sandy?

Would love to hear what social sites you relied on before, during and after Hurrican Sandy and why.  There's much discussion about social media's potential as a public utility, which in my opinion,  isn't quite there yet.
