How do you enter DFU mode on an iPhone 4?

pcaulfield

I experienced a problem updating my iPhone 4 using iTunes. I had the same problem in the past with a 3GS, and was able to correct it by entering DFU mode (which I remember because I thought it meant Don't Mess Up, or something along those lines). What I don't recall is how you do it. Anyone know how to enter DFU mode?

"Entering DFU Mode (Official Instructions)
Plug your device into your computer.
Turn off the device.
Hold the Power button for 3 seconds
Hold the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds
Release the Power Button but keep holding the Home button
Keep holding the Home button until you are alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode
Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present"

It's actually called Device Firmware Update. Here is a step by step guide. It should be the same on the iPhone 4 as other iPhones.

Now follow the steps in the window to begin entering the DFU mode.

  • Step 1. Hold your device, then click the green “Start” button;
  • Step 2. After clicking the “Start” button, press the “Power” and the “Home” at the same time immediately for exact 10 seconds. The program will count the time for you.
  • Step 3. When the 10 seconds passed, release the “Power” button right now, but keep pressing the “Home” for another 10 seconds.
  • Step 4. You’ll be informed that you’ve successfully entered the scanning mode of the device after another 10 seconds, and you can release the “Home” button then.

Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power button, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time. If the iPhone screen is black, blank this is DFU Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes. DFU Mode can be difficult to enter sometimes, just keep trying. DFU Mode is a black, blank screen with iTunes saying Recovery Mode.
