What's the best way to learn how to root an Android phone?

owen

My current Android smartphone, an LG Revolution, is almost 2 years old, so since it is due for a replacement anyway, I was thinking about trying to learn how to root it and see if I could get a few more months out of it. I know what rooting is, but that is about it. What is the best way to learn how to do it? I looked at a few youtube videos, but I was hoping to find a step by step guide.

The three sites that come to mind immediately are Android Central, Phandroid, XDA developers (too technically oriented as a first step, and the forums can be pretty unforgiving of ignorance at times).

As the earlier poster suggested, I would check out Android Central. I leaned how to root devices there myself, and it has enthusiastic and generally helpful people on the forums ranging from complete newbies to ROM developers.  Just take your time, read everything until you have a solid understanding of what you are doing, and go to it. Sure you can brick your phone, but that's unlikely if you are methodical about the process. Good luck!

Here's a good background article on rooting that you might find interesting.

Android rooting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_rooting

"Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem. Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. Rooting is similar to jailbreaking devices running the Apple iOS operating system. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system.

As Android was derived from the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device is similar in practice to accessing administrative permissions on Linux or any other Unix-like operating system such as FreeBSD or OS X."
