Is there a way to encrypt data on an Android phone, and if so, how do you do it?

I wrote recently for CITEworld about ways to secure Android phones. One option is to encrypt:

 

An Android owner can do this by merely going to Settings, Location & Security, Data Encryption. There's also an option that allows users to encrypt files saved to the phone's memory card.

"You can encrypt all the data on your phone: Google Accounts, application data, music and other media, downloaded information, and so on. If you do, you must enter a numeric PIN or password each time you turn on your phone. Note that this is the same PIN or password that you use to unlock your phone without encryption, and cannot be set independently."

I think the encryption method that christopher mentioned is only an option on devices running 4.0 or later. It you are one of the 36% of Android users still rocking 2.3 you will have to figure something else out.
