Does iBooks allow you to print out books?

Is there a way I can print a hard copy of books if I own them on iBooks? I’m going on a camping trip and I would love to read a book I’m about halfway through, but I don’t want to carry around a tablet and be "that person".

Oops, regarding the "that person" thing. The Kindle is smaller and less obtrusive than an iPad or iPad mini. So you won't look like as much of a dork if you bring one with you. Heh, heh.

If you need a longer lasting battery than that of an iOS device, consider the Kindle. You can get by for weeks without recharging the battery, and it's quite easy to read outside in daylight. I used to read on my iPad, but switched to a Kindle Paperwhite. Best ereader I ever owned. Plus Amazon has apps for many platforms, so you can read your Kindle books on pretty much any device. You can't do that with books purchased in iBooks, as Apple doesn't support other platforms.

I can understand not wanting to be "that person" wearing Google Glass on a camping trip, but I don't think tablets are considered particularly weird or geeky these days. OK, maybe in the woods. That being said, I doubt the creatures of the forest will think any less of you.

But to answer your question, here's what Apple support has to say:

Printing from iBooks requires an iPad, Phone, or iPod touch with iOS 4.2 or later and iBooks 1.2 or later with a supported AirPrint printer. iOS 4.2 and iBooks 1.2 are not compatible with original iPhone or iPod touch (1st generation).

I’m pretty sure that you can’t print out ebooks from iBooks (lots of vowels in front of the word "book" in a single sentence), but you can print PDFs. It would be nice if you could print out ebooks; I don’t really see the problem with it. The amount of toner and paper you would use would seem to preclude it being a cost effective way for anyone to make illegal copies to sell for profit. Now, there may be a source for the book you have already purchased in PDF format out there if you look around. Hint, hint.
