How can I tell which browser tab is playing music?

ehtan

At any given time, I have 10-20 tabs open in my browser while I’m at work. When autoplay video or music suddenly starts it can be quite jarring in a quiet office and it can take me a while to find the culprit. It just happened to me in fact, and it is annoying. Is there a way to identify which browser tab is responsible for it without manually going through all of them trying to figure it out?

If you are still using Chrome, I’ve noticed over the past week or so that a little speaker icon now appears on whatever tab is playing music or a video. It’s one of those little things that makes a bigger difference than I would have expected. No more clicking tabs and scrolling around trying to find the source of my annoyance. Thanks Google!

There is a browser extension on Chrome, not sure about other browsers. The one available for Chrome, MuteTab, is nearly useless to be honest. It just stops scripts on a page, if (BIG if) it even detects anything. There was a Chrome beta that had a little red speaker appear on the tab with audio, but as far as I know this has never made it out of beta. Too bad - that would be a useful little addition. About the only thing I can recommend at the moment is to install AdBlock Plus, which should at least prevent some of the ads that start autoplaying. I suppose NoScript would prevent media from playing, but it has such a negative impact on the online experience that I rarely enable it. I switched from Firefox to Chrome about a year ago, and I don’t recall there being a solution available for Firefox at that time either.

FlashBlock
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/flashblock/gofhjkjmkpinhpoiabj...

"The extension automatically blocks flash content on webpages.
Each flash element is being replaced with a placeholder that allows you to load only selected elements on a given page.
You can also manage a whitelist of allowed websites via a configuration panel.

In general, FlashBlock helps with lowering memory usage, reducing cpu cycles,
and can be used as an alternative to AdBlock. "

Try installing a flash block type of plugin. That will stop any flash videos from loading until you click on the flash object on your screen. That's probably the best way to deal with it since so many of these annoying things are flash-based.
