How to use Pantone colors in GIMP?

SilverHawk

We have some brochures that need to go to the printer, and they want us to use Pantone to ensure accurate color matching. We are using GIMP on Ubuntu 11.04. This is out of my area of expertise, I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of graphic design and printing - is there a way to use Pantone in GIMP?

It seems that you might not be able to at all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantone#Intellectual_property

"Pantone asserts that their lists of color numbers and pigment values are the intellectual property of Pantone and free use of the list is not allowed;[21] however, copyright law does not support such a claim.[22] This is frequently held as a reason why Pantone colors cannot be supported in Open Source software such as GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) and are not often found in low-cost software.[23] Pantone palettes supplied by printer manufacturers can be obtained freely, and, depending on supplier, do not come with usage restrictions beyond a sales ban on hard copies of the palette.

Pantone also produces Hexachrome, a patent pending six-color printing system.[24][25]"

I think Mr. Nerney is right. I haven't used GIMP in over a year, but I had heard a number of times back then that Pantone would "soon" been available in GIMP, yet it never seemed to come true. Kind of like Duke Nukem was for about a decade.

Someone may correct me, but it sounds like you can't, at least based on this...

Pantone asserts that their lists of color numbers and pigment values are the intellectual property of Pantone and free use of the list is not allowed; however, copyright law does not support such a claim. This is frequently held as a reason why Pantone colors cannot be supported in Open Source software such as GNU Image  Manipulation Program (GIMP) and are not often found in low-cost software.
