What is the best way to recover deleted files on a Mac?

TheCount

My wife accidentally deleted some files on her Mac and wants me to help her recover them. I'm a Windows user and I've used Recova in the past with some success on PCs, but I'm not sure what would be the best way to go about trying to undelete Mac files. What do Mac users suggest using for file recovery?

You might want to check out Disk Drill as well.  It is not freeware to actually use Disk Drill to recover files, but it is free to install.  Which is nice.  I guess.  Whatever, it is worth paying for anyway.  It is very user friendly, so if you are not a Mac user, it should still be painless to use.

I Have been running Stellar Phoenix the whole day. It is still running but it looks like it has recovered 52GB, will be interesting to see if it actually pulls proper files back or if the 52GB is all gibberish. On their site it states that it even pulls data from "Undelete all your files, folders, documents even after completely emptying the Trash by hitting 'Command+Shift+Option+Backspace'."And: "Recover any Mac Partition/Volume that has been deleted months ago. With Stellar Mac Data Recovery, you can search and list all the previously existed volumes in your Mac hard drive."So I'm holding thumbs. Will keep you guys posted if it was all successful

Is your Mac set up with Time Machine? If so you should be able to get the deleted files that way. Click the Time Machine icon in the dock. Then go back to before you deleted the files, they are probably still available.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

That link will take you to a page about Time Machine. Click the Restoring Data From Time Machine Backups option. That should get you started.

You can find Data Rescue 3 here: http://tinyurl.com/recover-delete-file It is not free, but will let you see what it can recover and will recover one test file without a purchase. As for firewire target disk mode, the hard drive should show up as if it were an external hard drive on the other Mac, with or without any data recovery software. You may even be able to copy the files over directly, and not bother with the recover software.

If you have backup, the best way is restoring from backup. If not, you have to use mac data recovery software to recover deleted photos from Mac.

Does your wife use Time Machine on the Mac? If so, I think it would be easy to recover the deleted files.

If not, she may need a tool to recover deleted files for Mac. There are quite a lot of choices.

Good luck!

Not familiar with data-recovery issues.

I wonder if any apps can help you recover files by folders.

Some of my friends use Data Recovery Pro to restore deleted data.

I've never used because it's expensive.

there is no better option of data recivery than going for the Mac time machine, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427 ,  It not only keeps backup of your latest files but also comes with the trust of mac.. But the only drawback I find in it is, it is either scheduled or you an do it manually but what if yu want to recover files which you accidently deleted after your latest backup?? For thise situations, you can go for any of the 3rd party Data Recovery Software for Mac, which comes really handy in these data apocalypse situations..

Ever since I started working on OS X Mac, I have face data loss on couple of occassions. And that too on different types, first due to hard drive formatting and secondly due to logical corrupt hard drive. Though it looked as if I will be unable to recover my drive again, Stellar Phoenix Mac data recovery software helped me each time to recover files from corrupt & formatted disk. This tool is genius.
