Why is Linux so unsuccessful in the market?

The top 500 supercomputers list (http://www.top500.org/) shows that the top 10 fastest computers in the world are all running Linux. If Linux is so much faster than Windows and the Mac, how come nobody has been able to make Linux more popular on the desktop?

Until Linux gets adopted by a fad, and can offer features that Windows and OSX cannot, it will be dismissed as a cheap/free, "you get what you pay for" kind of operating system.

Being cheap/free is a feature that Windows and OSX cannot offer, and why Linux is as popular as it is. You do, however, get what you pay for, because time is not free and Windows has ages of user testing. Users who enjoy using a mouse for everything.

When I was teaching kernel debugging courses to IBM, their embedded software engineers reminded me that embedded Linux is the biggest market for Linux. Also, Android is a version of Linux, which just hides what is underneath. If you root an Android device, you will find Linux. While Windows may rule the desktop world, Linux is much more common in the server market, the embedded device market, and the mobile device market.
