What's the best virtualization software to use for small business? Do I have to spend a lot of money for VMWare licenses?

Which virtualization software you choose for your small business likely depends on what you need the virtualization software to accomplish. VMWare offers a free version (VMware Server) as does Microsoft (Virtual PC). But perhaps the most flexible is VirtualBox, which is free and runs atop of your operating system without need for a hypervisor. If you need to scale your solution across higher-end servers, VMWare is still the best solution because of the easy upgrade path. Educational institutions may prefer the way that Citrix XenDesktop addresses their VDI needs, but the cost might be difficult to justify for smaller businesses.
