    There's a reason more people buy Windows PCs than Apples. It doesn't have anything to do with technology, security, or perceived superiority. It's just cheaper. And Apple's long-standing strategy of charging a lot more and creating a "cool" image to support the high price isn't going to cut it during the recession.

    Apple keeps pummeling Microsoft in its ads, and yadda yadda yadda, the world's largest software maker plans to hire comedian Jerry Seinfeld for its new marketing campaign, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. Continually painted by Apple and other rivals as uncool and unsafe, Microsoft plans to spend US$300 million on a new series of advertisements designed around its "Windows Not Walls" slogan that will feature Seinfeld and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates. Seinfeld will take home $10 million for his role in the spots, the report said, citing people familiar with the situation.

    According to a Gartner report, the global PC market grew 16 percent in the second quarter, a surprising figure given the stagnant economy. With the high cost of gasoline and rising food prices, not many people have anything left. But it appears that this rise in sales came at a cost. The Gartner report notes that the rise came at the expense of revenues, since vendors have slashed prices to drive sales.

    Apple Computer's App Store is available as of today. CRN has a good slide show preview of the site for us non iPhone users who are interested, but not interested enough to actually visit the real site. Apple boss Jobs touts the quality and sophistication of iPhone applications available.
