  • Create and organize iOS folders

    Posted June 20, 2011 - 3:32 pm

The very first incarnation of the Mac OS offered folders for organizing files. Not so for the first iteration of the iPhone. It took until June 2010 and the release of iOS 4 for folders to arrive on iOS devices. Whether your iPhone is sparsely loaded with Apple's default apps, your app count totals in the hundreds, or you fall somewhere in between, iOS folders--despite a few limitations--provide a simple way to streamline your home screens.
  • iOS 5 should right many prior iOS wrongs

    Posted June 10, 2011 - 4:18 pm

I’ve achieved the hat trick of iOS device ownership—I have an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch—so clearly, I love the platform. But like others, I’ve long been disappointed with some of iOS’s failings. That’s why I found this week’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote so thrilling.

Earlier this week at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple finally offered up a look at iOS 5, the planned update to the company's mobile OS. Although it wont be out until this fall -- Apple isn't yet saying exactly when -- iOS 5 promises to deliver much-needed changes to the OS, which is used on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
  • iOS 5 additions force some developers to think different

    Posted June 9, 2011 - 9:40 am

It’s pretty much a given that with each major update to Mac OS X or iOS, Apple will add to the OS features previously provided by third-party developers. These are often features that were in such demand that others had stepped in to provide them, but, eventually, Apple saw their utility and decided they were things that should be a part of the OS (or its built-in apps). Whatever the case may be, each year, select developers come away from an Apple keynote or press release rethinking their future business plans.

  • iOS 5 looks great, has two glaring omissions

    Posted June 7, 2011 - 9:07 pm

Now that the dust has settled from yesterday's Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, I can safely say iOS 5 will be a huge win for Apple. Playing around with some of the new features such as Notification Center and iCloud on my iPad 2 re-invigorates my excitement for developing for the iOS platform. In many ways iOS 5 has already exceeded expectations- out of my top five wish list last week, Apple knocked three of them out of the park. There were however, two glaring omissions. This is what they are and why they were left on the bench for now.
  • First look: iOS 5 notifications

    Posted June 7, 2011 - 11:28 am

One of the biggest changes in Apple's iOS 5, unveiled Monday, is a welcome overhaul to the iOS's relatively simple notification system. Right now, new alerts pop up in a modal dialog box that interrupts whatever you're doing. If you receive multiple alerts while your device is locked, you have to dismiss each one of them separately, but you can only see one alert per app; if you receive five text messages, you’ll only be alerted to one. If you unlock your phone quickly before you read an alert, and only notice at the end of your swipe, you're out of luck. And sometimes, swiping to unlock your phone just as a notification appeared means that you’ll unintentionally launch the alerting app.
  • With iOS5, Apple mostly plays catch-up

    Posted June 6, 2011 - 8:35 pm

When it's released this fall, iOS 5 will be a major update to Apple's mobile operating system. But it won't be very revolutionary. Rather than introduce innovations, Apple will mostly fill in iOS's holes by borrowing features already found on other mobile operating systems, or correcting longtime annoyances.
