Podcasting as a medium exists mostly because of Apple's iPod. Before the MP3 player hit the market, there wasn't much of an audience for mobile, digital audio on demand.

While the popularity of Apple's iOS devices increases, many don't understand the basic security features that Apple makes available to them. Here are the top five security settings for these devices and how to use them.

Apple reportedly will send the Golden Master version of its iOS 5 mobile operating system to manufacturing partners around the last week of September, and that means a new iPhone could be on the way shortly thereafter.

Lodsys, the patent-holding company suing iOS and other developers over alleged patent infringement, has now brought suit against a variety of other companies, including the New York Times Company. As reported by FOSS Patents, Lodsys on Tuesday filed a new patent-infringement lawsuit against DriveTime Automotive Group, ESET, ForeSee Results, LivePerson, OpinionLab, and the Times. Each of those six companies has previously filed its own declaratory judgment action against Lodsys in various other jurisdictions.

The second iOS 5 beta was seeded to developers last week and it looks like Apple has "stepped up their game" to combat jailbreaking, as reported by Gizmodo. The latest beta also takes measures against downgrading.

The very first incarnation of the Mac OS offered folders for organizing files. Not so for the first iteration of the iPhone. It took until June 2010 and the release of iOS 4 for folders to arrive on iOS devices. More than 5,000 iOS developers are in San Francisco for Apple's big party at the Worldwide Developers Conference, but a new report says the hippest place to be is the Android Market. The study, from Bluevia and Vision Mobile, found that 67 percent of developers code for Android, while iOS trails at 59 percent.

When Apple senior vice president Scott Forstall took the wraps off iOS 5 at Monday's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, he focused on ten of what he said were more than 200 new features in the next incarnation of Apple's mobile operating system.

One of the biggest changes in Apple's iOS 5, unveiled Monday, is a welcome overhaul to the iOS's relatively simple notification system. Right now, new alerts pop up in a modal dialog box that interrupts whatever you're doing. If you receive multiple alerts while your device is locked, you have to dismiss each one of them separately, but you can only see one alert per app; if you receive five text messages, you’ll only be alerted to one. If you unlock your phone quickly before you read an alert, and only notice at the end of your swipe, you're out of luck. And sometimes, swiping to unlock your phone just as a notification appeared means that you’ll unintentionally launch the alerting app.
