Netflix pays $9M to settle user-data misuse charges; aims to misuse more data with Facebook

Netflix has agreed to pay $9 million to settle a suit over its illegally long retention of customer rental records. It is now redoubling efforts to get law changed that keeps it from posting to Facebook lists of the things its customers are renting right now.

It's not true that it's not possible to opt out of Google's new policy of combining all customer data from almost all its services. It's possible, but not easy. The point is to build more realistic profiles for ad targeting and marketing; if Google let you opt out, how could it sell your soul?

SOPA's assumption of guilt provisions were outrageously unconstitutional, but didn't emerge from a vacuum. In 2012 it seems as if cops, marketers, social networkers, service providers or anyone else with a use for private data claims the right to take it, or just the ability.

The 64-bit versions of Windows 7 are vulnerable to a surprisingly simple error that causes a disastrous blue-screen-of-death crash, but only when running Apple's Safari browser. An IFRAME tag with the wrong value taps the blue screen and might let malware run with root privileges.
