  • Apps we can't live without: Default Folder X

    Posted February 9, 2013 - 8:20 am

Software success is fleeting--for every program such as BBEdit that becomes a software staple, you can find countless applications that are all the rage for a year or two and then either stop working or fade in popularity. Longevity is especially rare for software that tweaks your Mac's features and interface: Whenever Apple releases a major OS update, it renders some of that third-party software incompatible or irrelevant.
  • Apps we can't live without: DragThing

    Posted January 26, 2013 - 8:45 am

For many people--particularly those who've come to the Mac after first using an iOS device--there was and always has been Mac OS X. Before that... darkness. In truth, Apple has left a long trail of OS revisions in its wake--from System 1.x to Mac OS 9.x. (Apple changed its OS naming scheme from System This to Mac OS That when it moved from System 7.5 to Mac OS 7.6.) In these earlier days of the Mac's operating system you couldn't fling a brick in any compass direction without hitting some utility that attempted to make that operating system better (or more attractive or, in far too many cases, goofier).

There are a ton of Android apps out there -- 600,000 in the Google Play store alone, the company said at this summer's Google I/O conference -- but there are only a few that rise to the status of being a critical, everyday app for a lot of people. Without further ado, here are some of those that we defy you not to get hooked on.

  • Find the best music identification app for iOS

    Posted August 11, 2012 - 7:35 am

When Apple finally opened up the iPhone to third-party apps in 2008, some of the earliest ones I downloaded were music identification apps. These apps can listen to ambient music and identify the song title and artist as well as provide other relevant info. Things have come a long way since then; more apps have joined the party and many of them have added tons of features. So with all the choices available in music ID apps, how can someone choose the best one? In my opinion, there are quite a few criteria to consider, but I think there are three important measures to consider.

Good thing there are people like the guys at Razorfish in the world, who've come up with a gumball machine that dispenses content.
  • Apple’s iOS 6 removes password prompts for free apps

    Posted July 28, 2012 - 7:15 am

Apple is making it easier to get apps from the App Store with iOS 6 by removing the need to enter your password for every app you download to your device, according to numerous online reports. If all you’re doing is downloading an app update, a free app, or an app you previously deleted, Apple reportedly will not ask for your password in its next update to its' mobile OS for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. Instead, you will only have to enter your password for paid apps. The change was first publicized by a Reddit user with access to the latest beta version of iOS 6 released to developers.

    Posted July 16, 2012 - 4:35 pm
